Medical Services

We understand how challenging it can be to get children to various specialists.

At Pillar Schools, we bring them into our schools through specialized consultative and clinic services. We also value professional development and offer continuing education to teachers and an internship program for future specialists.

Specialized Clinic Services

Physiatry Clinic

Dr. JenFu Cheng, a physiatrist from Pediatric Rehabilitation Specialists LLC, holds a physiatry clinic every other month at each school from September to June. Dr. Cheng evaluates and recommends new durable medical equipment for students to ensure they receive the necessary support to foster growth, therapeutic progress, and comfort.

Neurology Clinic

Quarterly Neurology Clinics are held to conduct a focused neurological assessment for students. Clinics include collaboration with parents and staff, and make medical recommendations to enhance student care.

Vision Clinic

Dr. Michael T. Montenare visits our students twice annually to conduct vision screenings for Pillar School students. During these screenings, a thorough assessment is performed and prescriptions are provided if needed. In collaboration with Walmart, students are provided eyewear at a greatly reduced cost or free of charge.

Dental Clinic

KinderSmile Foundation visits Pillar Schools every 6 months to provide dental screenings and education for students. If further dental care is needed, referrals are made to local dentists with experience treating individuals with special needs. KinderSmile Foundation is currently working on implementing toothbrushing stations to help improve dental hygiene awareness for students.

Durable Medical Equipment and Orthotic Clinics

Our Durable Medical Equipment Department provides bi-monthly on-site clinics to assist students and their families with all issues related to their equipment, including manual or power wheelchairs, adaptive strollers, walkers, canes or crutches, standers, bathroom equipment, therapeutic chairs, protective helmets, orthoses (braces for feet) and splints (for arms or legs) and patient lifts. Our experts help families order the appropriate equipment (including dealing with insurance companies and evaluating various types of equipment) and assist with any modifications and repairs needed.

Specialized Consultative Services
Nurses

Nurses are available every day to assist the students with medication administration, treatments and tube feedings as ordered by their Physicians. The nurses also maintain the student’s medical records, emergency action plans and assist with clinics as needed.

Some students require a personal nurse who will medically care for the student throughout their school day.

School Physician

Our School Physician, Samuel G. Carruth, MD helps to review our medical procedures, reviews and signs off on our standing orders.

The school physician also will review our student’s physicals for our special Olympics and sports teams after they are completed by the student’s personal physician.

Social Worker

The social worker provides day to day social / emotional support to students. The social worker participates in IEP meetings and assists in intakes and any interventions needed during the school day. Our social worker is available to assist families in coordinating ancillary services for their child, including but not limited to providing support related to guardianship and DDD requalification. We also assist in coordinating service delivery with state agency case managers, as well as transition to adulthood.
